Project Concept: Artistic Commentary on Societal Issues through Cosmetics Line
In this innovative project, I conceptualized and designed a cosmetics line featuring over nine beauty products, each addressing a distinct social issue. The overarching theme revolves around the notion that Americans metaphorically "wear" these issues, participating, provoking, and embodying them as a nation. The makeup products, intricately themed around issues like gun reform, sexual assault, whistleblowing, COVID-19, police brutality, and animal rights, serve as a thought-provoking commentary on our societal challenges.
The makeup ingredients, humorously labeled as "student blood," ignorance, stupidity, pain, and suffering, sarcastically highlight the foundational elements contributing to these social issues. The project aims to shed light on the concealed nature of societal problems, paralleling the way makeup conceals and transforms. Just like makeup can be removed, I emphasize that, as a nation, we have the potential to unveil and address these problems.
The accompanying website mirrors the project's thematic depth, boasting a modern and sleek design radiating luxury and security. Darker tones, commonly associated with chic brands, establish a unique visual identity for the cosmetics line. A striking feature of the website is the inclusion of one of my favorite beauty influencers, a biologically male individual who identifies with the LGBT+ community. This deliberate choice adds a touch of diversity and complexity to a platform addressing society's most controversial issues.
Inspired by the glamour of CHANEL, each makeup product pays homage to the iconic brand. This choice underscores how, as a society, we often glamorize and accept social problems rather than confronting them directly. By aligning societal issues with the revered status of CHANEL in the beauty industry, the project challenges viewers to reconsider their perspectives and actively engage in addressing these persistent challenges.
