The Great Gatsby Pencil Art

2020

My diptych delves into the intricate layers of the American Dream, the disillusionment within our educational system, and the complexities of human relationships, seen through the lens of a first-generation immigrant. Each panel tells a nuanced story, interwoven with symbolism and vivid colors.

The representation of the American Dream unfolds dynamically across the triptych, with red, white, and blue elements cascading from the center to the bottom left corner. This visual movement mirrors the ever-changing landscape of dream pursuit, gradually slipping away akin to Gatsby's hand, particularly poignant for immigrants navigating this elusive dream. Love and betrayal enter the narrative on the left, where a pink sphere embodies the inevitable intertwining of these emotions. Pink lines hatch into the American Dream, depicting the impact of love's complexities on the pursuit of the dream.

In the middle panel, the focus shifts to the failures in education, notably surrounding climate change. A staircase leading to hell serves as a stark metaphor for humanity's impending doom if decisive action is not taken. The transition from cool to warm tones in the hills reflects Earth's transformation, while the glasses in the mountains offer a dual perspective on climate change—either recognizing the urgency (red in blue) or remaining oblivious (blue in red). The fading effect of the pink architecture signifies humanity's diminishing presence, echoing the impending consequences of our collective ignorance.
