Suicide Pants
2020
In this piece, I wanted to reflect on the nature of suicide and the emotional trauma which accompanies this devastating act. Throughout my life, I’ve suffered from bullying, depression, loneliness, and emotional degradation. Most of my mental trauma was caused in middle school, where both my academic and personal lives spiraled into uncontrollable mayhem. The red belt around my waist is intentionally made of rope, tied in an infamous knot shape, and was dyed red to symbolize a bloody noose. I fabricated white pants and sewed a plethora of denim loops onto the garment. Each loop is symbolic of a mini noose and of the isolating, enclosed, and damaging emotions which seemed to attach themselves to my body which destroyed my mental wellbeing. The denim material is representative of my damaged youthhood. Like most kids, I wore jeans to school, but after years of bullying and mockery, my jeans or in this case my childhood years, became damaged and destroyed. The weight of the pants, which is around nine pounds, represents the “gravity” of depression, loneliness, and pain that I had felt.
