Outbreak
2021
Outbreak" serves as a powerful artistic representation, intertwining the impact of COVID-19 with the pervasive issue of Asian hate, while simultaneously symbolizing resilience and strength. This project utilizes over 130 handmade virus balls and nearly 14 yards of tulle to create a visually striking depiction of a viral infection, resembling a flesh-like manifestation overwhelming the human body.
While COVID-19 is portrayed as a literal viral infection, it also serves as a metaphor for the widespread racism directed towards Asians—a virus of its own kind, deadlier and more pervasive, causing harm on a global scale. The model, my Korean/Chinese cousin, becomes a poignant symbol, forced to grapple with both the physical and emotional implications of racism. Her intentional playfulness and confident poses reflect a stance of embracement and strength against discrimination. Through her calm composure, she peacefully parodies the racist labels and names directed at her culture.
Having personally experienced racism, I chose not to retaliate with hatred but instead embraced the attacks, uplifting myself and gaining a profound awareness of the widespread nature of these vicious assaults. "Outbreak" synthesizes my perception of COVID-19 with the broader concept of systematic and social oppression, creating a thought-provoking narrative.
The entire photoshoot, including the selection of the location, was personally curated to ensure each element of this piece resonates with the message of resilience, resistance, and the unwavering commitment to confronting societal issues head-on.
